Retrospective

Looking back, many of the earlier FLORAGE marker drawings draw inspiration from Flora Rosefsky's family, friends and her community. What began in the 1970s as personalized "Highlights of a Life" drawings for her children, Rosefsky's fok art work grew to include the creation of "calendars" to mark the highlights of a particular organizaion, institution or for Jewish life-cycle event sand holidays. Working from many photographs and memorabila as reference materials, Rosefsky sketches out the FLORAGE in pencil before applying marker pens and color pencils.

Rosefsky's first large community quilt that she designed, "Threads of Tradition", was completed in 1989 for the Jewish Community Center of Binghamton, NY and became the model for more community based quilt projects in the Atlanta area.

About the word "FLORAGE": Thank you to Shalom Staiman, who when living in Binghamton, NY, called Rosefsky's charming drawings a "FLORAGE". The artist registered the name as a trademark for her original artwork.
