ketubah Reflections/Revisited I
Mixed media collage: pastel, gouache, watercolor, fabric, paper cutouts
22 1/2" x29" - 2006

The actual words that were incorporated within Ketubah Reflections/Revisited I came from copies of my marriage Ketubah, usually translated as “document" but actually meant “it is written". Like many women of my generation, I did not fully appreciate or understand the powerful words written more than 2000 years ago to protect our rights and to serve as a modern prenuptial agreement, until I revisited the words much later. My reflections combined vibrant brushwork with fragments of once delicate eyelet curtains and other highly textured paper cutouts; their complexity became a metaphor for the underlying tensions between the ideal Ketubah words of promises and the reality of life's struggles and challenges.
