Hanukkah
Marker pen drawing, (11x14"), 1999

A family is seen lighting the Hanukkiah, a nine branched menorah or candelabra, that is only used to celebrate this Festival of Freedom, also known as the Festival of Lights. Eight candles recall an historical event and perhaps a miracle when a cruse of oil needed for the Temple lasted eight days instead of one. The ninth candle is called a Shamos, or working candle which lights the others. It is traditional to light one's Hanukkiah in front of a window so that a passerby can see the lit candles, a reminder of religious freedom.
