Bar Mitzvah
Marker pen drawing, (11x14"), 1999

Bar Mitzvah literally translates "son of the commandments". In the Jewish tradition, a boys age of thirteen notes the passage from childhood to adulthood when he is now obligated to take on the responsibilities of the mitzvot (good deeds) in Torah. During a traditional service on a Saturday morning, when the Torah is brought out from the ark, it is customary for the Bar Mitzvah to read a Haftorah, a reading from The Prophets, and for some, also to read directly from the Torah's parchment scroll.
