Jewish Baby Girl Calendar
One of five in a Jewish Life-Cycle "Calendar" series of colorful folk art marker pen drawings, 11x14", 1992

Jewish traditions and rituals surrounding the birth of a Jewish baby girl are continually evolving. However the concept and wording of her entering the covenant is the same as for a Jewish baby boy. Read like a visual calendar, starting in the upper left of the drawing, one sees the new parents at the hosptial with their baby daughter. A new tradition occurs on the baby girl's first Shabbat eveing, (Friday night) when the mother and her female relatives and friends gather to light Shabbat candles together. A more typical custom is to have a baby naming ceremony held in the synagogue a few months after the child's birth. See the new baby girl sleeping soundly in her bassinet with some folkore protection from the "evil eye", such as adding a red ribbon, sweets and nuts.
A quote from Midrash, "With the birth of every child, the world begins again and again", exemplifies the connection of each generation to creation, and therefore to God.
