Jewish Baby Boy Calendar
One of five in a Jewish Life-Cycle "Calendar" series of colorful folk art marker pen drawings, 11x14", 1992

On the eighth day after a Jewish baby boy is born, the Brit Milah, takes
place. This ritual of circumcision goes back to the days of Abraham, over
3500 years ago. The covenant of circumcision is a physical sign of the contract
between God and the Jewish people. It is said, "As he has entered the
covenant, so may he enter the world of Torah, the wedding canopy and a life
of good deeds". Read like a visual calendar, starting with the upper
left corner of the drawing, one sees many of the rituals and customs assoicated
with the birth of a baby boy. It is customary for the parents at the Brit
Milah ceremony to formally announce the name of their son and to talk about
those relatives or Patriarchs whom the child was named after.
The quote from Midrash, "With the birth of every child, the world begins
again and again", exemplifies the connection of each generartion to
creation, and therefore to God.
