Bat Mitzvah calendar
One of five in a Jewish Life-Cycle "Calendar" series of colorful folk art marker pen drawings, 11x14", 1992

Bat Mitzvah literally translates "daughter of the commandments". In the Jewish tradition, a girl's age of 12 or 13 notes the passage from childhood to adulthood, when she can assume the responsibilities of the mitzvot (good deeds) in Torah. The artwork is a visual calendar, starting in the left hand corner where the young girl studies the siddur (prayer book) in preparation for her becoming a Bat Mitzvah. The community public celebration of a girl reaching this milestore is a fairly new custom that originated in the United Sates, marking the occasion with rituals, prayers and celebration.
A complimentary printed text entitled "From the Artist's View" will accompany each drawing sold in the Jewish Life Cycle "Calendar" series. To personalize the drawing, contact the artist.
