SKHAKH II
3’x5’ Sukkat Banner Collage Using Contemporary
Ephemera 2008
Skahkh, Hebrew word for a temporary roof made for a Sukkah,
a booth built during the Jewish fall holiday of Sukkot. This
special roof requires enough open space to allow one to see the sky,
moon and stars above within its framework which is made out of corn
stalks, bamboo stalks or other natural materials.
Vinyl wallpaper attached to a wooden slat, various
photographs, ephemera and newspaper clippings, stamps, and paper cutouts
form the composition of a temporary symbolic roof, or Skahkh

I seek the meaning of “shelter and sanctuary” throughout much of my new work. The Jewish festival of Sukkot resonnates personal reflection, as I re-interpret the significance of the Sukkah’s temporary roof by using “temporary” ephemera materials to create the art.
