Limbs
A response to express the exhibition theme, Cost of War, at City Hall Plaza Gallery - Binghamton, New York
Collage: twisted twigs and clear tape within a wood grid frame, 16x20”- 2010

As a metaphor for an amputee’s limbs, broken twigs appear twisted
and distorted, at times torn or separated from a living tree, no longer
able to grow new life; while the twigs first appear strong, they can be brittle
and easily broken. A signature weapon of the Iraq war—the roadside bomb—continues
to create amputees, where soldiers become veterans in bionic legs and arms.
Wounded soldiers continue to arrive at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington,
D.C., and each year hundreds are taken to Ward 57 at Walter Reed Army Medical
Center’s famous amputee center. Soldiers as amputees bravely deal with
the cost of war—but at what price in terms of their future life, and
that of their families?
