2012 Exhibits

divide the waters flora rosefskySong of the Land, January 20 – May 31, 2012, Hebrew Union College-Institute of Religion, 3077 University Avenue- Los Angeles, California.  Jewish Women’s Artists Nework (JWAN) a special interest group within the Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA) annual national exhibition explores the contemporary isues of protecting and sustaining the Earth. Ruth Weisberg, former chair of the Art Department and Dean of the Roski School of Art at the University of Southern California selected 44 works of 206 submitted entries and will contribute an essay to the exhibition catalogue. DanceThe Joy of Judaism: The Art of Flora Rosefsky, December 7,2011-February 12,2012 , The Rosenzweig Gallery at Judea Reform Congregation, 1933 West Cornwallis Road, Durham, NC.  A solo show of paper cutout and mixed-media collage with work illustrating Torah and other Jewish text. Also included are drawings expressing personal reflections from the artist’s Jewish heritage. HanukkahCOLLAGE with Mixed-media Materials: Rituals and Shelter & Sanctuary,  August 5 - through the 2011/2012 academic year, Marcus Hillel Center at Emory University, 732 Gatewood  Road, NE, Atlanta, GA. A solo show inspired by Judaic text as well as from personal memories of Rosefsky’s family and Jewish life-cycle traditions.

The gallery exhibition, “Rituals”, manifests ways Jewish festivals, holidays and events are expressed.  In the Ray’s Bistro area, the work reflects a recurring theme of “Shelter & Sanctuary”, with many works focusing on the fall Festival of Sukkot. Marcus Hillel Center hours:  Mon.-Thurs. 9:30am –6 pm, Fridays 9am -4pm. Closed Sat./Sun. Open on weekends for activities and special events. Using items such as muffin tins, U.S. Navy metal mess trays and tablecloth (circa 1940), Rosefsky uses these found objects as support for paper, fabric cutouts and in some cases, pen and ink drawings. Boxes of ephemera, often called “worthless treasures” by her father-in-law of blessed memory, provide most of the stamps, photos and letters used in her work.

Inspired by her personal heritage, experiences of spirituality, and nature, Flora creates images that are both universal and intimate. Her work often explores written text that is rich with metaphor and spiritual symbolism. The results reveal a dreamlike visual language that is uniquely her own. Her series of "birds" currently hangs in our reading room

A fascinating and diverse roster of artists living and/or working in the Decatur areas agreed to open each of their studios to the public for this unique event, the Decatur Artist Studio Tour on Saturday, March 3, 2007 from 4:00 – 9:00pm.

In similar fashion to home tours, ticket holders visit the studios at their leisure, enjoy refreshments and chat with artists. Artwork is available for purchase from the artists. Among the studios and artists participating are The Sycamore Place Gallery and Studios with artist Flora Rosefsky as well as other studio artists at that location. Tickets are $15 and are available at Seventeen Steps, 235 Ponce De Leon Place, Decatur, and Intown Hardware, 1404 Scott Blvd., Decatur. On the day of the tour, tickets will be sold at the artists’ studios.
